Grab Bars
Grab bars provide safety for seniors and folks with disabilities,
Grab bars are especially important in wet areas…e.g. showers and baths,
When surfaces get wet like walls and floors they become extremely slipery,
And if one does fall, most of the surfaces are hard and unforgiving,
Correctly mounting grab bars is critically important, the last thing one wants is for a grab bar to be incorrectly installed,
If one has a a full fiberglass or acrylic surround they may notice a void behind the surround,
Solid Mount Fiberglass Bar Backer and Mounting Kit will work with that void,
I’ve included link below,
If one has tile, the install will be different, e.g.
Porcelin tile requires a special drill bit to create a hole in the Porceline, ceramic tile is much easier to penetrate,
Finding the studs is the most important step in the entire installation process, having a good stud finder is necessary,
Whatever the substrate, with the right tools, the install can be performed correctly,
A vertical entrance bar should be installed on the wall opposite the faucet,
A horizontal bar should be attached to the side wall and should be as long as possible. It should be about 30 inches up from the tub floor,
An another vertical bar should be attached to the faucet end wall near the faucet handles,
It can also be a good idea to stand in the showe to determine the best position based on your height, the way you shower, etc.
Incidentally, grab bars are not only for seniors they can also prevent accidents involving children,
Depending on your substrate, it may be more advantageous to hire a professional, that being said, your tried and true diy’er can accomplish this project,
So if you or someone you know is getting up there and maybe the get up go has gone up and went, don’t hesitate, one fall could change it all.
