Gate Repair

To Replace or Repair?

Best Answer…

IT DEPENDS!

If you want to downsize in the near future it’s mostly less costly to repair,

If your new there, and plan on being there into the indefinite future, replacement could be an option,

In a recent case, repairing was the choice taken due to downsizing becoming a viable option,

The gate was in a complete state of total dismay,

Or,

so it seemed!

The bottleneck was the main post from which the hinges hung,

It had seperated from its footing about 6″ down,

The big decision was to reinforce the current post or Replace it!

We chose to reinforce,

Driving homemade wooden shims into the space between the concrete and post worked well,

Next,

Creating an angled brace near the bootom of the post, and adding concrete for counter resistance on the 45 that faced the ground,

I then added a lateral brace, and an opposing brace on the outside, opposite the brace added with the concrete (without concrete)

The pieces of the gate were then reassembled like the “Bionic Gate”

Testing was now necessary

Afer the 1st attempt, I made some adjustments,

One of the adjustments was to create slighly more clearance on the bottom to give us some wiggle room, no pun intended, lol,

The latch needed to be adjusted and

Wallah,

it closed with precision,
