Are you in need of door repair?

There are different types of door repairs to contend with so let’s start with the basics.

Understanding some basic door terminology

You may have heard of different terms referring to different parts of a door,  i.e…..Door Jamb, you locked your keys in the house and YOU NEED YOUR KEYS NOW!, you can call a Lock Smith but just don’t have time, so……you try to push through the door and eventually with enough force you “split the jamb”, this is when the handle lock and/or deadbolt split the wood that they insert into, and this can be a very costly door repair because it often means buying not just a new door but a pre-hung door (door and jamb together), and most likely new inside and outside molding around your door.

A less expensive solution to repair a damaged door jamb

The first thing to do is to carefully remove the inside trim, and remove the broken jamb pieces, glue (use wood glue) the jamb pieces back to the remaining jamb, drill some little holes where you will connect the jamb pieces together (helps prevent splitting) and use some good screws that don’t split the wood and screw into the pre-drilled holes you just made, then put the trim back on with a nail gun and your in business. If your inside door trim broke during your break in,  you can glue it together before re-installing. When your done sand off the glue that is visible, repaint the inside door trim and the door Jamb, and you probably cut your door cost repair to about 25%

Door does not close properly or the door sticks

This is a common challenge here in Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks, Moorpark, Northridge, Chattsworth or any towns that were victims to the earthquakes, doors become out of square, doors also become out of square just due to settling over time and as a result the door or doors just don’t close properly, in other words the doors stick. This too can be a very costly repair because you need to replace the Door, The Jamb and very often the inside and outside trim.

Solution to fixing a door that sticks

The much lower cost solution to replacing the entire door, trim and jamb is to remove the door from it’s hinges and plane it down with an angle grinder or an orbital sander and in some cases, if it can’t even close, you may need to cut a section off with your circular saw, just be careful not to cut off too much. The next step would be to repaint the door (or at least the part that you sanded or cut) and put the pin back into the hinge and you just saved a boatload by repairing your door rather than replacing it
