Installing New Outdoor Shutters on Your Home

Installing shutters on a house can really dress it up!

Or,

If one already has shutters, changing the color can give the home a much needed face lift,

New Shutters come with both shutter fasteners, and shutter screws,

I prefer the fasteners because I think the look better

If one has existing shutters that are held by fasteners, try to pull out the old fasteners using a pry bar or a claw hammer, if you can get them out in one piece, its helpful,

If they snap off inside the hole try to push them through with a screwdriver and if that doesn’t work, a drill may be necessary,

Note: Use a drill bit that is the same size as the fastener, as one does not want to make the hole bigger because the new fastener will not grab.

Once the old shutter is removed, use it as a template to drill the new holes on the new shutter, line up the old shutter on top of the new shutter and drill pilot holes using a small size drill bit,

Once the pilot holes are drilled, proceed to drill the new holes with the corresponding drill bit that matches the fastner size (usually displayed in the instructions), otherwise, just eyeball it,

Place the new shutter against the wall and it will line up with the holes, where the old fasteners were removed,

Tap your new fasteners into the holes and they they should fit snugly inside the holes.

If shutters are being installed where there are no shutters, there are a few different steps,

Measue and mark for the new holes in the new shutters, depending on the size, they’ll most likely be 4-6 per shutter, the holes should be uniform on both sides of the shutters,

Follow the same steps as mentioned previously, using a small size drill bit for the pilot hole, moving up to the corresponding bit matching the fastener,

Take the new shutter and place/position it on the wall (next to the window) and drill pilot holes into the siding on the home using the new shutter holes as the template,

Drill your holes into the siding (whatever that may be, i.e., stucco, wood, brick or vinyl) into the pilot holes that were just created with the corresponding size drill bit, matching the fasteners,

Place your shutter against the wall and insert your new fasteners,

As the procedure is repeated the law of accelerated acceleration will take place and each shutter installation will go quicker than the previous one,

Enjoy your homes new appearance!
