How to Fix a Hole in Stucco

In my research, there’s not alot of information on “medium size holes”, small holes have kits and large holes follow the traditional paper, lathe, srtatch and brown, then texture and paint,

What I’m describing, is a hole from someone who recently had to have a panel relocated, maybe due to a code violation from a Solar Project, HVAC or adding a Charging Station, all of which require 200 aps vs the tyical 100 amps older homes come with…..

Very common in So Cal

With your medium size hole, (maybe 14″×18″),
there are a number of steps,

You’ll need some tar parper, metal lathe and a bucket off stucco patch,

The first thing you’ll want to do is break apart some of the stucco around the opening to expose the old lathe (probably chicken wire),

In addition to exposing the old lathe, you’ll also want expose the stucco around the perimeter with your angle grinder with a cocrete blade attached, cut the stucco on an angle to expose as much stucco around the edge as possible for bonding of the new stucco patch,

Once your happy with your opening, cut out a piece of tar paper slightly larger than the opening, and slide it under the old paper along the top of your hole, this will prevent water from causing any future damage because it creates a path for water to run over the tar paper, which is highly unlikely, but still a good idea,

The next step is to install your wire mesh over you paper,

Cut out a piece of wire mesh to fit in the opening and sort of push it in snugly, incidentally, I like to cut my mesh with an angle grinder using my metal cut off blades, cuts like butter, however, you can use tin snips as well,

Now its time to apply the stucco patch, pour some stucco patch powder into a bucket with some water, mix with your trowel untill you get the consistency of oat meal,

Take your trowel and push it against the metal mesh, starting out with a thin layer, keep applying untill your even with the wall surrounding your hole,

Most stucco walls have a texture, if your texture is a standard “bumpy” texture, you can pick up a handful of dry stucco patch and throw it against the wet stucco patch to create a “bumpy texture”,

When your stucco patch turns gray, it’s dry and ready to paint!

Have fun!
