Grab Bars

Installing a Grab Bar in the Shower

There are many options when it comes to choosing Grab Bars,

Suction cup Grab Bars are one choice, however, since it’s held by suction, there’s always the concern that it will loosen over time.

I think the thought of mounting a Grab Bar on tile, with screws, can be a little intimidating,

What if I crack the tile?

How do I know it’s secure?

Might be some questions one might ask,

Putting screws into tile might not be as difficult as one would think.

1st, choose a Grab Bar that has a screw cover that pops apart for mounting and is snapped back on when your done connecting your Grab Bar.

Next,

Choose the placement of the Grab Bar and mark the screw holes with a Black Sharpie (if the tile is dark, use a lighter color),

Drilling tile,

As I’ve mentioned in a previous article of installing a shower door, a Center Punch is a great tool to shatter the outer glaze of the tile before drilling,

If you don’t have a Center Punch, there are lots of other options, a Phillips Head Screwdriver with a sharp tip works well, just lightly tap the screwdriver on your Sharpie marks with a hammer, the outer glaze will slowly chip away making a place for you to drill.

An easy technique, is to start off with one of your “skinniest” drill bits, working your way up,

Once your hole is large enough to insert your plastic anchor, your in business,

Place your plastic anchors in your holes, grab your Grab Bar, line the holes up with your anchors and secure your Grab Bar.

After your Grab Bars are secure, snap the covers on and your good to go!
